Open source / Mailchimp

Open-source alternatives to Mailchimp

listmonk and Mautic are open source: free to download and run on your own server. Mailchimp costs from $13 a month, with a free plan.

listmonk

Open source (AGPL-3.0) · Self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager

listmonk is a fast, self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager packed into a single program with a PostgreSQL database. You send through any email service you choose.

  • Newsletters and campaigns
  • Subscriber lists and segments
  • Templates
  • Single binary, easy to run
  • Bring your own email sending service

Free to download and run on your own server under the AGPL-3.0 licence; you pay only for your hosting.

Mautic

Open source (GPL-3.0) · Open-source marketing automation

Mautic is the largest open-source marketing automation project: email campaigns, landing pages, forms and contact scoring that you run on your own database.

  • Email campaigns and automation
  • Landing pages and forms
  • Contact segmentation and scoring
  • Own your data
  • Extensible with plugins

Free to download and run on your own server under the GPL-3.0 licence; you pay only for your hosting.

Before you switch

  • Free to use, not free to run. The licence costs nothing, but self-hosting needs a server (often $5 to $40 a month) and someone to install updates and keep backups.
  • Open core means the main product is open source but some features, usually for larger teams, need a paid licence.
  • Hosted versions exist for many of these, run by the makers. They cost money but save the upkeep, and you can still move to your own server later.
  • Licences differ. MIT and Apache allow almost anything. GPL and AGPL require you to share changes you make to the code; for normal business use, that rarely matters.
